Artist Statement

As an artist, I do not feel limited to a particular style or media. My impression of past, present and future revolves around many symbolic forms. My work arrives from metamorphic thoughts and is often created out of spontaneous scribbles and lines that develop into either a form of abstract or symbolic representation. The symbolism in my work usually revolves around the life forces of birth, sex, death, fear, hate, greed, and love. While earth, air, and water also have special meanings in my paintings.

As a surrealist, this form of automatism opens many doors for creativity. Whether it’s on paper or in the minds eye, the eye is accustomed to seeing what it knows, but in the seeking mind, the possibilities are endless to what can be seen. The subconscious mind plays a significant role in my paintings, as do night dreams, visions, fears, and desires. All of these provoke interest in “what is,” “what could be,” or “what should I really be seeing”.

Most of my work has less to do with perspective and realism, and more to do with imagery and colour. I enjoy focussing on how certain hues and values will affect an image, and how it relates to other objects in the painting. To create a piece that catches the eye while also promoting the mind to question provides a great and rewarding challenge.
